About Us

Pig’s Eye Organics is based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Our mission is to grow healthy, nutrient dense, chemical-free food while expanding the local food movement in order to create a more sustainable food system in the Twin Cities.  We seek out vacant lots in the city and turn them into organic micro-farms.  By growing where we live, we are greatly reducing our impact on the Earth, while empowering city-dwellers to take control of their food supply.

Unfortunately, most of the produce the average person finds in the grocery store has been trucked in from thousands of miles away. This results in food that is nutritionally compromised and is not nearly as fresh as it could be. In addition, precious natural resources are wasted shipping the inferior produce to our markets. Our hope is that we can help residents rediscover the joys and benefits of eating locally.

We practice organic growing methods on all of our micro-farms.  All lots first undergo a soil test which is conducted at the University of Minnesota.  There, the soil is tested for its PH, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium.  Since most of these lots once had homes on them, a test for lead is also conducted.  Once the test results are back, the soil is amended accordingly.  No chemicals are used on the farms.  Instead we use all-natural remedies to combat insects or plant diseases.  For fertilizers, we use fish emulsion, and make compost and worm tea. If you ever have any questions about our growing practices feel free to ask. We encourage visitors to our farms; contact us to schedule a time to see our gardens.

Almost all of our plants come from heirloom seeds.  We feel that it is important to grow heirloom varieties in order to protect genetic diversity.  As these varieties are not readily grown by large scale producers and are becoming more rare, we are especially committed to preserving these plants for future generations.   Plus, heirlooms are much tastier than conventional varieties!

The produce that we grow is sold at local farmers’ markets, restaurants, and through a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program.  We are also willing to fulfill specific orders depending on your needs.

As part of our mission we intend to help educate the community on gardening and healthful food preparation. We feel that everyone should have the skills necessary to provide food for themselves and their families.
